Travelling is a wonderful way of experiencing new occurrences, that can not often be found in our regular surroundings. In fact, who does not love traveling? However, although travelling is found to be a preferable way of discovering things by many individuals, not many often contemplate upon the different effects of travelling, or just tourism, such as the economical, social, cultural, and environmental effects. During our Tourism class, our group had pursued a discussion regarding the good, bad, and ugly effects of tourism. During this discussion, several significant points had been discussed. The discussion had begun with a scenario placed by Mr. Martin;- "What would one do is he or she as travelling in a foreign country, and had seen baby chicks faced downwards in a pit. Although the traveler had been told to leave the chicks alone as it was a part of the ecosystem, what would you have done?" Soon after a few classmates had explained their answers, most of which were to save the chicks, we had been delegated another scenario;- "If you were travelling in a foreign country, and had seen that a woman and her children were being abused, what would you do?" Although several students within the class had said that they would ignore it to some extent as it is a foreign country, I had disagreed upon that particular point. Regardless of if it is a foreign country, and one is not familiarized with the country's policies, abuse is still not ethical, and should be stopped. However, instead of directly involving oneself in the abuse, I would have particularly sought help from a higher authority, or at least questioned the situation to some legal force, such as the local police. Another particular point that had been mentioned during the discussion - that I had agreed upon - had been regarding the Olympics, and what had been done during the events of the Olympics, and how the represented the negative effects of tourism, (such as displacing the unfortunate, or utilizing local resources towards the Olympics, while the particular city or country is in need of dire help.) However, there had also been a few points that had not been addressed during the discussion, which I would like to share. The following points not only discuss the positive points regarding tourism, however, it also focuses upon the negative points of Tourism.
The positive effects that tourism can consequentially cause;
The negative effects that tourism can consequentially cause;
Therefore, reflecting upon the debate and the points that I have researched, I believe that tourism is a neutral industry, however, hints towards the negative side. Although tourism may be the reason behind a country's success, it can also soon be the reasoning behind country's downfall. It genuinely depends upon how a country handles the industry in order to see the results of the industry. Therefore, I believe that although tourism my appear to be a beautiful glass piece, it can easily shatter apart if not taken care of carefully.
