Introduction Food is essential to human life, as we all are aware. Initially, hundreds of years ago, food had only been served based upon their potential benefits as well as obligatory requirements. However, moving forward from centuries ago, food is now not only served on the basis of its benefits, however, also based upon its creativity taste, and cultural/country significance. For one of our previous Tourism assignment, it had been required for students to collaborate within groups, select an individual country, and then to potentially prepare and research regarding the dishes. The following food rational a research based assignment regarding the selected three dishes that we had chosen from Mexico; Quesadillas, Empanada, and Soapapillas (An appetizer, Entree, and dessert). Initially, after selecting the three dishes that we had anticipated in making our group had gone to purchase the ingredients. Upon doing so, and practicing creating every individual dish once before hand, our group had come prepared to class with delegated measurements and ingredients. Veggie Quesadillas with Melted Mozzarella and Cheddar Course Appetizer Cuisine Mexican Prep Time 15 minutes Cook Time 15 minutes Total Time 30 minutes Servings 4 Quesadillas Ingredients · 8 small sweet tomatoes · 1 onion · ½ bell pepper (Any colour) · 2 cups fresh spinach leaves (2 cups = 60g) · 4 tbsp red pesto · 1 cup cheddar (1 cup = 100g) · 2 cups mozzarella (2 cups = 240g) · 4 whole grain tortillas Directions 1. Wash the tomatoes and pepper, peel the onions and cut them all into thin slices - the cheese too. 2. Wash the spinach and let it drain. 3. Grab a tortilla and spread a layer of pesto over half of it. A tablespoon works well. 4. Add a light layer of cheese on top and a quarter of the tomato, pepper and onion, followed by a few spinach leaves. 5. Top it with another layer of cheese. 6. Then fold the other half of the tortilla on top and place in a large frying pan (nonstick). 7. Heat for 2-3 minutes. Flip and heat for another 2-3 minutes until the cheese has melted - a good indicator is a little running out the side. 8. Pro Tip: place a heavy pot on top of the quesadilla so that it flattens nicely and cooks more evenly - this will also stop the insides escaping! If you don't like the thought of putting a pot directly on your quesadillas then put a plate between the two. Reflection; Reflecting upon the cumulative success of our dish, our group potentially believes that the Quesadillas turned out to be a successful dish. Although our attempts during our practice had become insignificantly unorganized and messy, our initial attempts at school had been a success. Empanadas Course Main (Entrée) Cuisine Mexican Prep Time 25 minutes Cook Time 15-20 minutes Total Time 50 minutes Servings 6 Empanadas Ingredients
Reflection; Although the taste and shaping of the Empanadas had come out as initially anticipated, our group had potentially felt that our Entree dish required more filling, as well as less flour. During our initial practice of the dish, our group had deduced that the Empanadas required less flour, as our batch had become overpowered with flour. However during our cooking at school, the outer shell of the Empanadas had become a little rougher than before, making the filling to be appearing as if there is not enough. However, other than this, our group had been pleased with the cumulative outcome of the dish. Mexico inspired Soapapilla cheesecake; Course Dessert Cuisine Mexican Prep Time 30 minutes Cook Time 30 minutes Total Time 60 minutes Servings 12 pieces of Soapapilla (can potentially be adjusted with cutting size)
Reflection; Reflecting upon all three dishes that our group had created, our group had been the most appeased with our dessert dish. Due to several conflicts, our group could not create the dessert that we had initially planned, which was going to be a caramelized flan. Therefore, our first attempt for this dish had been at school itself. Regardless, the sugar content of this dish was well balanced and delightful, making this the most popular dish among the three. Mr. Sharma even had seconds! Considering the different learning techniques that our group members have learned and obtained during the course of creating the dishes, our group members are significantly satisfied with the experience of creating international dishes. Through this assignment, our group members have obtained an ideology as to how to enhance flavor, appearance, and color, as well as the significant spices and tastes that represent mexico itself. This assignment, cumulatively, has been a wonderful and remarkable experience!
